A “Big” Product Shoot

We get approached all the time to do product shoots and after a while, you almost forget that not all products are small enough to be shot on a tabletop.  A couple of weeks ago we were pleasantly reminded of this fact when we were commissioned by  a door manufacturing company to shoot one of their latest creations…a 7.5ft by 10ft aluminum trifolding door.

I have had a couple people ask if we had to use a different lighting technique for a product that big.  The short answer is yes, however, we used exactly the same principles we use when shooting something as small as a wrist watch.  The only difference is that the bigger the product is the bigger the light sources need to be.  So we used two 6 foot softboxes and a huge scrim, however the way they were set up was no different than a shoot for something much smaller.  To prove this point, we used the same lighting for the detail shots as we did for the big shots.

Thanks to La Cantina Doors for the opportunity.  They make amazing high end doors and if you want to see more of their remarkable products, visit them at www.LaCantinaDoors.com

Be Creative…and you may even get some sales

When you think of the word “creative”….payroll is not the first thing that comes to mind.  So when we got a call from  Coastal Payroll asking for a “creative portrait,” I was a pleasantly surprised.  But really, I shouldn’t have been surprised…the founders, Jonathan and Craig, are young, successful, and forward thinking entrepreneurs (traits shared with even the most “creative” industries). So after some brain storming, we came up with a fun idea for a new take on how to portray payroll services.  Sure Coastal Payroll helps people with their payroll needs, which comes with a multitude of mundane tasks, but the reality of their business is that they are tending to a business’ money and taxes (two of the most stressful things a business tends to deal with).  So below is a novel and unique image that I can guarantee no other payroll company is using to market their services.  Well done gentlemen!

KISS…keep it simple stupid

As I get further along in my career as a photographer I tend to find myself making things more complicated than they need to be.  Back when I first started taking photos professionally simplicity was a way of life…born out of necessity.  Basically I had a limited amount of gear and I simply had to work with what was available to me.  The interesting thing is that now that I have plenty of gear, an amazing studio, and increasing budgets…I still look back at some of the shots I took with a smaller camera and two flashes and realize that more is not always better.  Growing up, my Dad always used the acronym KISS (keep it simple stupid)…which he would say to himself every time that he was tempted to make things more complicated than they needed to be.  Below are a couple examples of images that I use as constant reminders to focus on the creative approach rather than the production.

Business headshots…gotta have em

It was not that long ago that the only professional people I knew who paid to have headshots taken were actors and real estate agents…well, let’s just say that the times have changed.  In the business world, the need for a quality headshot has become a true necessity.  Let’s face it, the internet and social media has changed the entire way we do business.  From the way we communicate with our clients, drive traffic to our sites, show off our work, prospect for leads, and even look for jobs…social media plays a huge role.  Even the most leery of business professionals most likely has a linkedin account.

So, in many cases the first time someone will see you is online in your profile.  We are visual beings and a photo (or lack there of) says a lot about the person we are looking at.  As social media has become more accepted and embraced by the business community, it is becoming less and less acceptable to neglect your profile image.  Below are the top 10 reasons you should have a good headshot.

10. You are a business person who has a facebook, linkedin, or twitter account
9. The shot you are using looks nothing like you do in person
8. You used a webcam or phone cam to take your current profile photo
7. You are a business person and care how you are perceived
6. You work hard to make good first impressions in person
5. You find yourself judging others profile photos
4. Other leader in your industry have nice photos…and have for a while
3. You are looking for a job
2. You are in sales
1. You see a good profile picture as an investment in your personal brand

Laugh a little…and you may even get some sales

For the past three years I have done a photo New Years card to send to our clients and also our friends and family.  What started out as a fun way for me to nurture my creative side and do a photo project for myself and my family has turned into one of the best marketing campaigns we do.

Literally every year our cards have gotten more and more of a great response (pushing me to be even more creative).  I have to admit, this approach has not been for the faint of heart.  Every time that we have done these cards, we worry whether it will be well received…mainly because it is a true reflection of who we are, which makes most of us a little uncomfortable and leaves us susceptible.

The reality is that people really LOVE seeing something with some true character and a little creativity.  Simply put, without realizing it, by creating an image that is a bit personal and also creative we separated ourselves from the flood of cards we all receive every year (also, we send a New Years card instead of a Xmas or Chanukah card). Of course we all enjoy getting the classic Holiday Card, but be honest do you remember many of them?  One of the common responses we receive from people who get our cards is “Every year we vote on the best card we get, and this year yours won for sure!!” and it’s usually followed up by “Hey, I was thinking of doing a photo shoot, what do you think about….”

Do I really need to do cold calls?

This is Local Focus Photography, how may I help you?

Along with our other grass roots marketing efforts, I recently came to the conclusion that YES cold calling is a business practice that I should be doing to increase sales for 2011.  Over the next few months I am going to throw caution and self doubt to the wind and play “the numbers game” of calling up people I have never met and introduce them to our services. Since this is something that I am neck deep in at the moment and also something I am struggling to find my way at…why not blog about it and share my experience with others who may just be in the same boat?

Stay tuned as I learn my way through this process.  Below are a few resources that I have already come across and please feel free to share your experiences and resources as well…I am sure there are plenty of photographers like myself who would appreciate using them.

Black Star Rising: Photography blog that has a lot of interesting articles pertaining to the business of photography.

Happy New Year!!

I truly cannot believe how fast this year has gone by…is it me, or are the years going faster as I am getting older? Anyways, every year we (me, my lovely wife, and our dog) look forward to creating our New Years card to send to friends and clients. This year was no exception and turned out to be one of my absolute favorites. So here’s to you and yours and wishing you the most amazing 2011.

Warmest Regards,
Jake
